New Democrats have a long history of being fervent defenders of public education.
This is rooted in our party’s values but also in the undeniable fact that education is the foundation allowing Canadians to build a secure future. Guaranteeing equal access to education is one of the most effective ways where we can ensure that people from all walks of life have equal opportunities to succeed. A well-funded public education system is necessary for a thriving democracy, a vibrant society, and a strong economy.
That is precisely why I fought against school closures in Vancouver East time and again and in 2015, I campaigned on increasing federal funding for student grants with an emphasis on needs-based grants, increasing post-secondary education transfers to provinces and territories, taking measures to halt the privatization of education, relieving student debt by phasing out interest on federal student loans, and working with provincial governments to make post-secondary education more affordable, accessible, and inclusive.
I will always stand up for investments in public education.
