When are the Liberals going to crackdown on the profiteering of corporate landlords that is keeping families from finding a home they can afford?”

NDP blasts Liberals for failing to crackdown on greedy corporate landlords

OTTAWA—On Monday in question period, NDP Housing critic Jenny Kwan blasted the Liberals for turning their backs on Canadians in need of a home they can afford. According to a recent report by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), rents are at an all-time high. Since Justin Trudeau became prime minister, rents are up a whopping 60 per cent for Canadians looking for a home to rent.

“Under this liberal government, the cost of rent for Canadians went up 60 per cent,” said Kwan. “Liberals are letting corporate landlords rip off Canadian families by jacking up rent when they bring in a new tenant, and vacancy rates are lower than ever.”

Kwan says that the Liberals are making it easy for corporate landlords to get a profitable pay day on the backs of Canadian families struggling to find a home they can afford in their own communities.

The NDP has been calling on the Liberals to take greed out of the rent that Canadians pay by blocking real estate investment trusts from acquiring rental buildings and increasing rent and setting conditions on CMHC loan insurances to prevent rent gouging and renovictions.

Media Statement: In Response to the Hong Kong Government’s Issuance of a Wanted List for Overseas Pro-Democracy Activists

I call on the Canadian government to take urgent and decisive action to:

1. Strongly condemn the Hong Kong government’s NSL and the targeting of overseas activists, including Canadian citizens and residents, and call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners in Hong Kong.

2. Impose targeted sanctions on Hong Kong and Chinese officials responsible for human rights violations and the erosion of Hong Kong’s freedoms.

3. Stop according any special rights or diplomatic status to the Hong Kong Economic and Trade offices in Canada.

4. Expedite the processing of PR application for Hong Kongers fleeing political persecution and to automatically renew their work and study permit in the meantime.
