OPEN LETTER to federal and provincial health minister, BC housing minister and Vancouver mayor on the supply of PPE to NGO and senior homes

It is my understanding that many nonprofit housing providers and care homes funded by B.C. Housing and the regional health authorities are part of a coordinated effort to receive PPE procured by the government, and many have received supplies.
I am concerned that senior’s care homes who are not operated and funded by B.C. Housing and the health authorities are still struggling to obtain PPE for their staff. In particular, Vancouver Grace Seniors Home (333 E Pender St, Vancouver, BC V6A 1V1), a care home in my riding, has reached out to me to inform me that they have been unable to obtain PPE for their staff.

RE: Seniors’ Care homes in need of Personal Protective Equipment

Dear Minister Hajdu, Minister Dix, Minister Robinson, and Mayor Kennedy Stewart,

I would like to begin this letter by acknowledging the ongoing work that you’re doing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pertaining to this letter, I would like to especially acknowledge the work that has been done to coordinate, procure, and distribute personal protective equipment (PPE) to nonprofit housing providers and care homes.

It is clear that seniors and staff in care homes are especially vulnerable to outbreaks of the COVID-19 virus. The recent tragedy at Heron Residence in Montreal is indicative of the very worst possible outcome when private seniors’ care homes are not provided with the same kind of directives and support that the public and government funded care homes receive.

I’m sure you will agree with me that protecting vulnerable seniors and their support workers is a top priority for all levels of government. During these unprecedented times, it is of utmost importance that all seniors and healthcare workers can access resources to help keep them safe. I am therefore writing to request that all seniors care homes, nonprofit housing providers, and nonprofit organizations that are providing essential services during the pandemic are included in the government’s coordinated PPE distribution efforts. I also request that an immediate effort is made to reach out to these care homes and organizations to begin coordinating distribution efforts.

As always, my office is available to assist in anyway possible. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Sincerely,

Jenny Kwan
