"Place people and the planet before oil and gas company profits": MP Jenny Kwan speech on NDP motion

May 17, 2022 - I make a speech on the NDP's Opposition Day motion calling on the government to: (a) stop using Canadian taxpayers’ money to subsidize and finance the oil and gas sector, including by eliminating financing provided through Crown corporations such as Export Development Canada, and excluding oil and gas companies from the $2.6 billion Carbon Capture Tax Credit, by the end of 2022; and (b) re-invest savings from both these measures in renewable energy and in help for Canadians struggling with the high cost of living. Canadians are paying almost $2 per litre of gas at the pump, while oil and gas companies are making record profits. Meanwhile Canada spends 14 times more on financial support to the fossil fuel sector than it does for renewable energy, even though it has failed to meet any of its climate targets to reduce carbon emissions over the last 40 years. There is no Planet B. We must do everything we can today to ensure that the planet will be inhabitable for future generations. The government must do the right thing and place people and the planet over oil and gas company profits now.:

MP Jenny Kwan: bring Afghan nationals who assisted Canada and their families to safety!

On May 10 2022, MP Jenny Kwan raised questions and concerns with the Liberal government's lack of action in ensuring that Afghans who are fleeing and hiding from the Taliban would be able to get to safety. There are over 300 former Afghan interpreters whose families have been left behind. They have made application and done a tremendous amount of work in guiding the government in bringing forward the necessary immigration measures to support their loved ones so that they can get to safety. Unfortunately, even with all of that guidance, the government has not been able to move forward in bringing their loved ones to Canada:

Jenny Kwan in Question Period: on protecting Afghan refugees

On Decemer 3, 2021, MP Jenny Kwan asked about protections for Afghan refugees: "The Liberal government has failed to meet even one-tenth of the commitment of protecting Afghan refugees. The Liberals' continued insistence on layers of red tape has left tens of thousands of Afghans fleeing the Taliban unable to get to safety. With each passing day, Afghan collaborators, human rights advocates, judges, women and girls face heightened risks. Will the Liberals simplify documentation requirements; waive the need for refugee status determination, as was done for the Syrian refugee initiative; grant temporary resident permits for those in need; and increase staffing for processing?"

MP Jenny Kwan on the 2021 Federal Budget: we need to address how inequality has grown

On May 25, 2021, MP Jenny Kwan spoke for a second time about the 2021 federal Budget - the need for a wealth tax on the very wealthiest people, and a pandemic profiteering tax, to pay for the basic supports that people need to get through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, especially seniors and people with disabilities; support for small businesses; targeted supports for culturally significant institutions like the PNE & Vancouver's Chinatown, for people in cultural industries, and more
